MOVING JAVA FORWARD
April 8th, 2012JavaOne Tokyo, the event came back to Japan for the first time in seven years since 2005, was held over two days on the 4th and 5th of April last week.
Although I had applied for the event earlier, I was, unfortunately, not able to participate due to my poor adjustment of business schedule. Instead, I had end up being entertained by the JJUG’s Java One Night Party (Japan Java User Group).
As many people had described, it may not have been a very good era for Java despite the fact that the event had not been held in Tokyo for seven long years. In fact, there was really nothing good to make with or without. Not only there was no feasible progress on the release of Java SE7, case like the Sun Microsystems had been acquired by Oracle for quite sometime and its future was still uncertain. Even the creator James Gosling had left the organization for good. There were voices cried out loud that there was barely anything exciting happened in Java and not much innovation on top of that.
However, there were far more programming (languages) in Java in comparison with other languages, Java still holds a large shares particularly in the domain of the enterprise. The enterprise system in nowadays had become an operation running in a 5 years or even 10 years span, depending on the system you were building and the development over the years. It really makes me wonder on the long term perspective, was our choice of technology in terms of quality, stability and continuity, really meant the same as the choice of no improvement and boring techniques?
Although there wasn’t any significant change in the standardized Java, various technologies had been widely spread across because of great engineers with diverse background of technical knowledge. The foundation of the Java community was strengthened mainly by the Open Source products as a whole. Technologies like Hadoop, Scala and Groovy, things that we have seen had developed around Java were even beyond Java’s expectation itself.
However, as the development swift as CPU changed to multi-core and cloud computing was spreading widely, the increasing demand for big changes of the Java language had undergone a few modifications of the Java foundation itself. Java SE8 Java EE 7 would be something as the solution itself, Java evolved so large rather than just itself. Following last year’s JavaOne SF, the session this time at the JavaOne Tokyo still concentrated mainly on the development around it. The participants’ interest on the Java development was so overwhelmed which wasn’t even odd to think that the event could have had an earlier start.
There were many interesting sessions at the JavaOne Tokyo such as the study cases of Twitter or embed, etc. It was quite impossible for me to attend all the sessions (4 tracks! even just a session in general). Of course, anyone can feel the heat as many people flocked to the venue, valuable time run out so quickly even if you were just doing nothing but talking with many technicians in the field.
I would like to express my gratitude to Terada San who organize the event after 7 years, and the speakers from Oracle USA. Many of you came to Japan for the first time and thank you all very much for sharing with us.
Through the JavaOne Tokyo this time, it had surely proven that Japan was still with great interest. The event served well as a place to feel Java’s evolution in the forefront. I hope that JavaOne would be held again in Japan next year. I, as a member of the community, would be honored to offer a small token of my help in the future development of Java, too.

肩書き
June 13th, 2011この6月より、従来の役職を廃止し、新たに社員全員が自らの肩書きを決めることにしました。
自らがアットウェアの中で、あるいは対外的にどういう役割や責任、権限で業務に取り組むか、さらには半年/一年先に自分がどうありたいか(目標)を「肩書き」というもので表すことを目的としています。
先日6/10（金）の全体会議で全員が肩書きと役割を皆の前でプレゼンする場を設けました。以前から個人面談などで自分がやりたいことや目標を聞く機会はもちろんあったわけですが、改めて「肩書き」と共に想いを整理することができ、また皆に知ってもらうよい機会になったのではないかと思います。初めての試みですからうまく機能して効果がでるかは分かりませんが、半年ないしは一年毎に見直しつつ継続していきたいと思います。
それにしても思ってた以上にみんな、よく考えよい肩書きをつけてくれました。自分が好きなスポーツに絡めたものから、語呂合わせまで。単なる肩書きだけではなく、自らが身を置く組織の提案も。名刺にも印刷してもらいますから、当社の社員と名刺交換する機会があれば是非気にしてみてください。できれば突っ込んでやってください。
ちなみに私も新たな肩書きを追加しました。「代表取締役 atWarer」。
4月1日、復興に向けて
April 1st, 2011震災から三週間が経過しました。例年であれば、本日 4/1 は多くの企業に初々しい新入社員が入社し、こじゃれたウソが飛び交い、そろそろ開花を迎える桜を眺めながら花見をいつにしようかと相談する頃、何かウキウキする特別な日。多くの事実に変りはないものの、未だ多くの方が被災地のガレキの山を前に途方にくれ、不自由な避難生活を送ってらっしゃることを思うと、今日の横浜の空のような晴れ晴れとした気持ちとは参りません。
震災直後から被災地にて過酷な救出活動に奮闘くださっている自衛隊、警察などの方々、原発で危険を顧みず復旧に勤しんでくださっている東電やそれに関わる企業の方々には本当に頭の下がる思いです。今後、長期に渡ってその地域の方のみならず全国から地方自治体公務員や建設、土木関係者が集まって復興に向けての活動が続いていくでしょう。
では、被災地で働くことだけが復興に向けてできることかと言えば、先日のサッカーの日本代表vsＪリーグ選抜のチャリティーマッチのように、すばらしいプレーによって多くの人が感動をし、被災地を含む日本全体を元気付けるような取り組みも考えられます。
今回の震災によって、日本人の多くのプロフェッショナルがプロフェッショナルたる仕事をする姿に、また混乱した状況においても毅然と行動する日本人の姿に多くの人が感動をし、日本人のすばらしさを再認識した事と思います。我々もソフトウェアのプロフェッショナルとして、日本の復興を担わねばなりません。

首都圏では暖かくなってきたこともあって計画停電の頻度が減り、電車の運行も回復してきました。大きな余震も落ち着き、依然原発は予断を許さない状況ではあるものの一時ほど大々的に報道されることが減り、一見、震災以前の状態に戻りつつあるように感じてしまいます。
しかしながら、実態としては被災地の状況は急激に復旧されているわけではなく、この夏に予想される大規模な電力不足を考えれば、今は震災以前の状態に戻すことが重要ではなく、これを機に今までの価値観や基準を捨てて、変革を進めていかねばならないと感じています。通常時に大きな変革をすることは極めて強い意志とリスクを伴い遅々として進まないようなことが多いわけですが、従来通りのことをやって従来通りの成果を出すことが困難な状況において、多かれ少なかれ従来とは異なる行動を取らざるを得ません。
不謹慎かもしれませんが、今こそ変革のチャンス。この苦難に甘んじることなく、従来以上の成果を挙げていくことが、必ず日本の復興に繋がるはずです。
被災地の大学向けDSpace、Shibboleth環境復旧を支援
March 28th, 2011昨日に続けて、被災地の復興支援のお知らせです。
この度の震災では多くの住宅や企業に加え、大学も大きな被害を受けたと聞いています。
弊社では大学で広く利用されているDSpaceによる機関リポジトリの構築、Shibbolethによるシングル・サインオンおよび学認への接続環境構築の支援を業務として行っており、被害を受けた大学の機関リポジトリやShibboleth環境の復旧を無償でお手伝いします。残念ながら、サーバの物理的な破損により、機関リポジトリやShibboleth IdP(LDAP)にしかないデータが失われたしまったものを復元することはできませんが、バックアップや元のデータがあるようならソフトウェアのインストール・設定とデータの投入は可能な限り行います。
また、大学事務システムの復興を機に新規に機関リポジトリの導入、シングル・サインオン導入を検討される大学のご相談にも無償で承ります。もちろん、実際の構築も可能な限り無償で提供できるようにしたいと考えています。
正直、どれほど望まれているかわかりませんし、いろいろと調整事も多い作業になるため、支援どころか邪魔をすることになるかもしれないと躊躇しているうちに、お知らせするのがずいぶんと遅くなってしまいました。頭で考えて何もしないよりは少しでも行動をしよう、多くの企業がそうであるように自らが得意とする仕事、社会における企業の使命を成し遂げることから始めようと思うに至りました。
もし、一校でもお手伝いできるところがあれば、日ごろお世話になっている大学への恩返しになるかなと思っています。
